WHAT A WEEK!

It had started perfectly. On the way to Garda I stopped in Venice to be present at the PEARL JAM concert during the Heiniken Jammin Festival. Awesome stuff :-)
I was bit touched when Eddie Vedder sang "Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town",which was the name of one of my 470es.... see video
By the way, the melges 24 offered a great show on Torbole fresh waters. About 60 boats on the starting line for the last leg of the VOLVO CUP.
The race officer, Fabio Barrasso, decided to make all us sail the course close to the eastern shore of the lake, which made the tactician's job harder, since it's not very common to compete there, and everybody had to deal with strategies quite different from usual.
Anyway the breeze was always nice and we sailed 12 races in 4 days.
On the first two days we were doing well: starts and speed were very good, but the wind patterns were tricky so it was very difficult to call good tactics. 2-7-2-2-6-9
On the third day, however, we were almost perfect. I learnt to read the wind properly and did excellent recovers on the runs. We scored 1-1-2 that day.
On the final day it was match racing between us and "Hurrican
e"(Alberto Bolzan/Daniele Cassinari). We won by two points, after recovering more than 20 boats on the final race, while Hurricane was leading! We never give up!!
So we won this last leg(results here) and the whole Volvo Cup circuit as well.
I have to say a big "thank you" to my team: they provided speed , good manouvers, and good spirit all along the year.
MICHELE GIOVANNINI
CESARE CLAUDANI
DANIELE FIASCHI
After an offshore regatta in southern Italy, I'll move again to the lake of Garda, for the melges 20 Gold Cup which will be held in Malcesine(22-25/7).
Ciao

IS IT OUR SPORT?

ALGHERO, NATIONAL MELGES 24 CHAMPIONSHIP.
We arrived in Alghero on Tuesday morning. 40 knots and huge waves forced us to stay ashore. On Wednesday we had to run a lot instead,( we were 8 kilos over the weight:-), before trying the new set of sails and see how the team worked with the new entry Daniele.
For us the first day was perfect, two bullets in a medium patchy wind and a steep chop.On the second race of the day we were on 2nd position, just behind "Uka Uka", but we were able to pass them with a couple of shifts on the second beat, and to increase the distance on the final run with great pace.
On the second day we sailed just one race, won by "Uka Uka".We finished 3rd.
On the third day we had a moderate seabreeze. The day was won by "Blue Moon" , scoring 1-3-1. We made few mistakes scoring 3-5-11. Anyway we were still leading. On Sunday it was not windy at all, so....have we won?not exactly! We haven't got drunk, we haven't celebrated..
Let's see what has happened.
THURSDAY , late afternoon : "Audi" gets a redress after being called ocs on the first race.
FRIDAY,late afternoon: "Blue Moon" asks for redress after being called ocs on the only start of the day. They don't achieve it just because the protest form has not been filled properly.
SATURDAY, 4 PM
"Saetta" comes back ashore as leader of the fleet. 1-1-3-3-5-11 is our series.
We have 13 points, "Uka Uka" (Bressani, McKee) 20 points(13-2-1-25-2-2), "Blue Moon"(Favini-Ivaldi) 20 points(4-11-27-1-3-1).
SATURDAY, 8 PM
"Eta Beta" asks and gets redress after being called ocs on race 4.
"Uka Uka" also gets a redress on race number 4, after being called ocs. In this way they become leaders with 11 points(they get 4 points for that race). It stinks...
During the evening we talk with many sailors telling that Uka Uka was over the line before the gun.
SUNDAY, 8.30 AM
I meet Matteo Ivaldi(Blue Moon tactician) in front of the race office. We decide to ask for a copy of the minutes of the previous night hearing.
We find the following statement of the president of the race comittee, Mr Ennio Pogliano:
"I called the protestant boat OCS, I saw it out of the line between other boats 2 sec before the gun, and at the gun I still was seeing it out. I used a transit of the pin on the shore. Some movements of the pin are possible because of the waves"
The final statement of the jury was:"The Race Comittee didn't give evidence of the violation of RRS29.1 by ITA 787(uka uka) because the Comittee itself didn't control the exact position of the starting line."
We fill a protest form as well, asking redress, because we are going to lose the championship ashore in that way!
SUNDAY 10AM : all boats sail to the racing area
SUNDAY 2 PM: all boats sail back after no racing, not enough wind to start a race
SUNDAY 2:45 PM: my helm Niccolò Bianchi and Matteo Ivaldi start the discussion in the protest room, taking some witnesses.
SUNDAY 7:30 PM: the jury still hasn't decided, Niccolò, me and my team have to leave to take the ferry.
SUNDAY 9 PM: we receive a call on the ferry. The jury has decided to give a redress to us under rule 64.2 . But it seems that we have to share the title with "Uka Uka"!!
U N B E L I E V A B L E
Basically the comittee saw Uka Uka out of the line, but it made the mistake of telling the jury about the use of the transit to identify the line, instead of the use of the flag of pin, which was covered by the sails of the ocs boats.
The comittee was so weak to force the jury to give all the possible redresses.
We think we have won on the water. All the rest is very sad.
We have just received the compliments from Lorenzo Santini(Uka Uka's owner), and from Federico Michetti. They finally say that we are the "real" winners. So at least we are happy for that.
But I'm happier to go sailing my moth next weekend on Garda.
I N C R E D I B I L E

HEADING TO SARDINIA

"Saetta" is leaving for Alghero. Between the 6th and the 10th of may we will be competing for the national title of the melges 24 class.
New sails are waiting to be used from us during the regatta, that might be very windy looking at the weather maps.
News: Daniele Fiaschi, expert international bowman, is coming onboard for this event.
Niccolò and me have just spent some relax time lately, in order to forget our not perfect performance of the last Volvo Cup leg, Scarlino, and to be mentally ready for this championship.
43 boats are coming,a bit less than usual(this is highlands problem), but all the top teams will be there: Favini,Bressani,Bolzan,Sibello, Rachelli,Fracassoli.
Keep your fingers crossed for us!

finally back to the blog. what has happened until now

Value Team in Lerici Saetta's crew after the second place in Sanremo
I haven't been updating this blog for a too long time. I will try to write as much as possible since now.
What happened during the last months?
March, Sanremo: first leg for the melges 24 Volvo Cup.5 races with sun and moderate westerlies. SAETTA, again with the good NICCOLO' BIANCHI at the helm, finished in the 2nd position, winning the first and the last race.
After that my "talisman" Alessandra decided not to be my talisman anymore, and ,consequently, a bad period started. I went with VALUE TEAM (melges 20)to "Pasquavela" regatta, where we tested both main and jib from QUANTUM SAILS: good sails, quite flat, they should be good for the Gold Cup conditions. Pasquavela so was a bad regatta of mine, but at least I understood new things about the mast tune.
The unlucky period continued over Scarlino, second M24 Volvo Cup leg, where we started poorly on the first day,and the tactics were bad on the second. We sailed finally well (3rd)in the only race of the last day, with very strong wind, to finish 8th overall. That day the whole team proved to be a top one. That's the way!
In this period I decided to quit my 470 activity as Giulio Desiderato's crew. There are many reasons for this choice. The good thing now is that I can work and live serenely.
The other good thing is that now I have some free time, and free time means also MOTH SAILING!!
"Cicciput" is already being restyled at the moment: many little things to do, but what I really need is to increase the depth of rudder to avoid ventilation and to be able to sail a bit nose down at high speeds. The top guys seem to do like that.
The last event has been the first leg of the AUDI MELGES 20 SAILING SERIES, in Lerici, with 27 boats. Value Team began poorly: we were over the line early, so had to restart. After all we did a very good race that day, using every gust of a dying northerly wind to pass from last to 9th.
On the second day we sailed 3 races. The right side was always favoured for the big shore effect. We won the first race, with better speed than the previous time with our Quantum Sails.
We were 6th in the second race, after a late start not close enough to the right side of the line, and 17° in the last one, horrible result due to a "park" in the start, near the comittee vessell. We finished 6°, very close to the leaders, but a bit sad to have already a discard for the series.
Anyway I have to say that this year our goal is the Gold Cup In Malcesine. Every leg before will be practice: we have to make many tests on the mast. I think there is still a lot to discover about the melges 20 tuning.
Now it's time for me to concentrate on the first big event of the year: the italian melges 24 championship, Alghero,Sardinia (6-9/5).Finally we go sailing in a new place. I can't hide my happyness for that.
Torno a scrivere dopo molto, troppo tempo.
Cosa ho combinato in questi ultimi mesi?
"CICCIPUT " è già in restyleing.

hyeres, final report

Yesterday we finally sailed the last race of championship with a different wind direction, SW, which let  the competition be different than the usual drag race. Unfortunately  our start was bad and after tacking several times to look for a free lane we broke rule 15 after a lee-bow against a french boat. The Jury was there and we had to make a 2 turns penalty. We were almost last after that. We recovered well to finish 28th, but our near opponents in the rank sailed in the front of the fleet so  we lost 2 positions, from 8th to a disappointing 10th.
Congratulations to Uka Uka, Alina and Blue Moon. They were definetly the fastest and the most consistent in the starts, which was sooo important in such a big fleet.
The next event on the 24 will be the world championship in Annapolis(23-28 october), where I will call tactics again for Carlo Fracassoli on the new boat "Gullisara".

hyeres day 4

Today the wind was lighter, 7 to 10 knots. The speed was much better than yesterday.  We started well in the middle-left, but after some minutes we had to tack because a british was pointing too high for us. We were lucky to find a lane to tack back and head left again. We were lucky again to able to sail free until the end of the leg, turning the top mark 3rd. On the run there was a right persistent shift and we lost an irish boat which had gone to corner and lead the race then. We went to right mark at the gate and passed JoeFly, and then we controlled th fleet until the end of the race to finish 3rd.
The second start was bad because the boat under us started 10 seconds earlier, so they killed theirselves and  us. We crossed behind half fleet and went to the right, with the left side always favoured with the easterly wind. We turned the mark 20th-25th, and gained more than ten boats on the first downwind, making an early gybe which took us to the layline while the others were overstanding with a right shift.
On the second beat we gained some space , controlled Bolzan and Bressani. On the last run we passed the ucranian boat to finish 7th.
Much much better today!!

day 2 and 3

Yesterday the wind was a bit lighter than the day before. We sailed 3 races.
We started late in the first one and  had to cross behind 60 boats with the usual  left side favourite. We recovered well downwind, but we ripped our gennaker. On the  second beat Cesare did a great job changing it very quickly and we lost just few lenghts for that. We sailed the last run with our PZR(power zone reacher), but we still gained two positions, until the 11th place.
On the second  race we started well in the middle, but after a couple of minutes our speed was a bit poor so we  got stucked near Joe Fly , and had to tack away too early. Sometimes it's better to have a leebow on the start than a minute later. In fact it was very difficoult to get free after that situation. We finished 11th.
On the last race we started again in the middle, our speed was ok and we turned 8th. During the two runs we gained a lot and finished 4th. Ashore we found out we were ocs.
Today was a very bad day. Just before the first start the wind dropped, we were in the middle and started very late, then new pressures were coming from the sides and we were stuck with no wind in the back of the fleet. We recovered until something around 40th.
The last start was brilliant, but we were not fast enough to keep going to the left side, and begun to "rebound" between other boats. 21st.
Now the championship is gone for us(4-8-10-11-ocs-38-21). On the next two days we will try to find out what's wrong with the set up of the mast.

Hyeres,Melges 24 europeans, day 1 r

Great sailing conditions in Hyeres today:sun, warm water, 14-16 knots from 95°, and a nice wave to surf downwind.86 boats on the starting line.
Two races were sailed, the course a double windward-leeward.
The shifts were small  and it was a sort of drag race after the start to the favourite left side of the course.
On the first race  we started very well a bit windward of midline and  rounded 5th. Downwind the timing for gybing back  to port was crucial and we passed Blue Moon and Alina at the gate.On the second beat I did a not perfect positioning near the port lay line and lost Alina. We finished 4th.
On the second race the wind was a bit lighter. We fucked up the start because our jib somehow didn't unroll at 20 sec to go. I did a good job finding pretty soon some good free air lanes  in phase with the windshifts. We rounded almost 15th and again made a good move  gybing in pressure earlier than the others, rounding 8th. On the second beat we passed Bursic, but lost Celon who was really quick and finished 8th.
We are 5th overall now, very happy not to have a discard yet in such a big and competitive fleet.
Hopefully somebody tomorrow will stop Uka Uka, two bullets for them today...

Basta Liguria Please!

Last weekend "Saetta" took part to the last leg of Alassio Winter Cup. It was sunny and warm.
4 races were sailed, 2 on Saturaday ,with a medium and very shifty northeasterly wind, and 2 on Sunday, first with a light northeasterly , and a moderate southwesterly then.
Personally I was able to let Saetta sail in a quite solid way in the first three races. Just in the last I was mocked by a huge lefty in the first windward leg. Our series was 2,2,2,7 and we were 2nd in the rank just behind "Alina" skippered by Luca Valerio, with Matteo Ivaldi calling tactics(1-3-3-5). Pietro Sibello was at third place.
So we are happy after this first event: Carlo(Fracassoli) steered very well in every race and the crew(Michele Giovannini,Cesare Claudani,Stefano Nicolussi) confirmed to be one of the best around.
On the next weekend we'll have a training meeting with Nicola Celon and Luca Bursic on Garda Lake.

Assenti ingiustificati Giovannini, Fracassoli e Claudani.

Coppa Italia Melges 24 Malcesine - Vittoria a Nicola Celon

Desiderato-Saetta

ALLENAMENTO A TORBOLE

Stay tuned!
