Value Team in Lerici Saetta's crew after the second place in Sanremo

I haven't been updating this blog for a too long time. I will try to write as much as possible since now.

What happened during the last months?

March, Sanremo: first leg for the melges 24 Volvo Cup.5 races with sun and moderate westerlies. SAETTA, again with the good NICCOLO' BIANCHI at the helm, finished in the 2nd position,winning the first and the last race.

After that my "talisman" Alessandra decided not to be my talisman anymore,and ,consequently, a bad period started. I went with VALUE TEAM (melges 20)to "Pasquavela" regatta, where we tested both main and jib from QUANTUM SAILS: good sails, quite flat, they should be good for the Gold Cup conditions. Pasquavela so was a bad regatta of mine, but at least I understood new things about the mast tune.

The unlucky period continued over Scarlino, second M24 Volvo Cup leg, where we started poorly on the first day,and the tactics were bad on the second. We sailed finally well (3rd)in the only race of the last day, with very strong wind, to finish 8th overall. That day the whole team proved to be a top one. That's the way!

In this period I decided to quit my 470 activity as Giulio Desiderato's crew. There are many reasons for this choice. The good thing now is that I can work and live serenely.

The other good thing is that now I have some free time, and free time means also MOTH SAILING!!

"Cicciput" is already being restyled at the moment: many little things to do, but what I really need is to increase the depth of rudder to avoid ventilation and to be able to sail a bit nose down at high speeds. The top guys seem to do like that.

The last event has been the first leg of the AUDI MELGES 20 SAILING SERIES, in Lerici, with 27 boats. Value Team began poorly: we were over the line early, so had to restart. After all we did a very good race that day, using every gust of a dying northerly wind to pass from last to 9th.

On the second day we sailed 3 races. The right side was always favoured for the big shore effect. We won the first race, with better speed than the previous time with our Quantum Sails.

We were 6th in the second race, after a late start not close enough to the right side of the line, and 17° in the last one, horrible result due to a "park" in the start, near the comittee vessell. We finished 6°, very close to the leaders,but a bit sad to have already a discard for the series.

Anyway I have to say that this year our goal is the Gold Cup In Malcesine. Every leg before will be practice: we have to make many tests on the mast. I think there is still a lot to discover about the melges 20 tuning.

Now it's time for me to concentrate on the first big event of the year: the italian melges 24 championship, Alghero,Sardinia (6-9/5).Finally we go sailing in a new place. I can't hide my happyness for that.

Torno a scrivere dopo molto, troppo tempo. Cercherò di aggiornare questo blog il più possibile d'ora poi.

Cosa ho combinato in questi ultimi mesi?

A marzo a Sanremo si è svolta la prima tappa della Volvo Cup dei MELGES24. In condizioni di arie medio-leggere da ponente e sole si sono svolte 5 prove. Noi di SAETTA, quest'anno nuovamente con il sensibilissimo NICCOLO' BIANCHI al timone, abbiamo chiuso al secondo posto, vincendo la prima e l'ultima prova,ma anche con un paio di risultati mediocri che ci hanno rovinato la media. La costanza invece ha pagato "Maidollis",timonata da Giovanni Pizzati, che ha scartato addirittura un 6° posto.

Poi la Ale talismano ha deciso di non voler più essere il mio talismano e conseguentemente è iniziato un periodo piuttosto negativo. Con il MELGES 20 VALUE TEAM siamo stati alla regata "Pasquavela" a Porto Santo Stefano,dove abbiamo provato randa e fiocco della QUANTUM SAILS: vele buone, tendenzialmente magre, che dovrebbero essere adatte a condizioni di acqua piatta e vento medio-forte del campo di regata di Malcesine, dove ci sarà la Gold Cup quest'estate. Pasquavela è stata una regata brutta da parte mia, in cui però ho capito alcune cose importanti sull'albero del melges 20.

Il periodo negativo è continuato anche alla regata di Scarlino con i 24, durante la quale abbiamo pagato tantissimo sia le partenze disastrose del primo giorno, sia la brutta tattica del secondo. Fortunatamente il terzo giorno ci siamo rifatti con un ottimo terzo posto nell'unica prova di giornata disputata con condizioni di vento estremo, sui 25-30 nodi, durante la quale tutto l'equipaggio ha dimostrato di essere di alto livello, e che ci ha permesso di risalire fino a un comunque deludente 8°posto nella classifica finale.

Nel frattempo ho deciso di interrompere la mia attività con il 470 a prua di Giulio Desiderato. I motivi sono vari. La cosa buona è che adesso posso con più serenità svolgere l'attività professionistica.

L'altra cosa positiva è che ho del tempo libero e tempo libero=MOTH!

"CICCIPUT " è già in restyleing. Tra le varie cose che voglio fare c'è l'allungamento del timone per evitare che ventili e riuscire a navigare alto ma con la prua leggermente più bassa della poppa. Sembra che quelli "fighi" facciano così.

L'ultima regata disputata è stata la prima tappa delle AUDI MELGES 20 SAILING SERIES,a Lerici, con 27 barche. Noi di VALUE TEAM abbiamo iniziato male, partendo in ocs e rientrando dentro la linea. Tutto sommato poi una buona regata perchè da ultimi in canna abbiamo recuperato fino al 9° posto, destreggiandoci abilmente tra le raffiche e i buchi di una tramontana in calo. Il secondo giorno invece termica da ovest e bordo obbligato a destra per effetto "costa". Vinciamo la prima, dimostrando di aver notevolemente migliorato la resa della randa Quantum dopo Pasquavela, un 6° nella seconda , dopo un partenza non bella e non abbastanza verso il comitato, e un orrendo 17° nella terza, a causa di un "parcheggio" trooooppo prolungato in partenza nelle vicinanze della barca comitato. Abbiamo concluso sesti in assoluto, a stretto contatto con i primissimi,delusi però dal fatto di esserci giocati uno scarto in ottica "series".C'è da dire che però quest'anno abbiamo come obiettivo primario un buon risultato alla Gold Cup (avendo già vinto le Audi Sailing Series nel 2009) e che sfrutteremo le altre regate del circuito per fare altri esperimenti con l'albero e ottimizzare la messa a punto. Siamo fiduciosi!!

Ora però è tempo di concentrarsi sul primo appuntamento importante dell'anno: il campionato italiano Melges 24 di Alghero. Finalmente si va in un posto nuovo!Devo dire che ne sono felice.

Downwind strength

One of the best sailing actions I have ever watched. Nathan's tack at the top mark is just amazing. Bora's speed on the downwind is impressive. He seems to be a bit higher on his foils and slightly bow down. His mode is higher but faster than Nathan's, whose foils almost ventilated down the run.Great stuff!

Sailed until september, then it has been kept dry in a box.

Complete for sailing: 1 sail,1 mast,1 boom, 1 set of foils(and foils covers), 1 trolley,1 top cover.

New ropes for mainsheet, wang.

New system to adjust  height on the water while foiling.

Changed wang system , easier to pull.

New hiking straps, with kevlar:they keep you anchored to the beast.

Longer wand with a paddle glued to it.

With this boat I was 2nd at the nationals in Garda.

For kicker pullers

Here's a picture of my kicker block, broken on the last training day in Campione.....

I also damaged the push rod during my days on garda lake: I had to cut it about 3mm and to rebuild the screw in the bottom part which inserts into the flap. It was very difficult to find the 2mm  tool which creates the screw. When I found it and fixed the sistem I had to unwind the push rod screw on the top part, since I had cut it,  to achieve again  the same main foil set up.

Walchensee report

Good wind, flat (and very clean) water, sunshine, good organization,nice people,good beer,food and lot of fun made the last weekend regatta in Walchesee a great event. This place is really ideal for sailing a moth.

I was sailing ok on Saturday, but my speed was really bad upwind so I scored just 8-8-9 in the 12 boats fleet. A bit disappointed for that. 

I have to say a big "thanks" to all the guys who helped me to improve my main foil set up. Thanks a lot , really. This kind of friendly attitude is very nice.

The next day I had much more lift on the main foil  and was quick enough to finish fourth in the only race sailed in a solid 15+ knots termical wind.

THE FIRST REGATTA

Walchensee, 1-2 of august, 2009

day 2 - 20 nodi

Oggi sull'alto lago di Como la breva ha soffiato intensa, con punte di circa 20-22 nodi.

Non l'ideale per chi, come me, ha alle spalle solo un'ora e mezza di "foiling".

La bolina non è difficile: barca sopravventata e via. Le virate non sono ne belle ne veloci, ma  almeno riesco a cambiare mura, a volte scuffiando, a volte no.

In andatura portante invece è stato un   delirio: continuavo ad alzarmi troppo, uscendo con il front foil dalle onde e quindi sfracellandomi nell'acqua. A fine uscita(in pratica si è trattato di un tentativo di raggiungere il circolo), dopo n scuffie riuscivo, con un buon lavoro di randa tra le onde, a navigare verso sottovento(non riesco a chiamarla poppa o lasco, l'apparente è sempre davanti), ma di strambate non se ne parla ancora,  nell'unica che ho tentato oggi mi sono fatto un male atroce contro una sartia.

Domani esco alla mattina così magari trovo meno vento e onda.

IL VARO DI CICCIPUT

Venerdi pomeriggio, dopo un giorno e mezzo a fare l'operaio nell'officina dello "skiffsailing center" CICCIPUT  è stato finalmente varato.Notevoli erano le mie preouccupazioni riguardanti il varo e l'alaggio, ma adesso sono molto più tranquillo perchè ho capito come devo fare.

La barca è entusiasmante: con vento dagli 8 ai 15 nodi, dopo una decina minuti per capire l'equilibrio,  ho fatto un'ora e mezza di sgasate incredibili. Quando sei sollevato ti rendi conto di quanto vai veramente quando hai qualche altra barca vicino, il che dura solo pochi secondi.

E' stato bello anche quando il gommone della scuola a manetta arrancava per stare dietro a  me di bolina.

Oggi  è nata la mia nipotina Lucija!! Oggi è il primo giorno di vita anche del mio moth  Bladerider.

Purtroppo ho solo le foto del meno importante dei due eventi.
