IS IT OUR SPORT?

ALGHERO, NATIONAL MELGES 24 CHAMPIONSHIP.

We arrived in Alghero on Tuesday morning. 40 knots and huge waves forced us to stay ashore. On Wednesday we had to run a lot instead,( we were 8 kilos over the weight:-), before trying the new set of sails and see how the team worked with the new entry Daniele.

For us the first day was perfect, two bullets in a medium patchy wind and a steep chop.On the second race of the day we were on 2nd position, just behind "Uka Uka", but we were able to pass them with a couple of shifts on the second beat, and to increase the distance on the final run with great pace.

On the second day we sailed just one race, won by "Uka Uka".We finished 3rd.

On the third day we had a moderate seabreeze. The day was won by "Blue Moon" , scoring 1-3-1. We made few mistakes scoring 3-5-11. Anyway we were still leading. On Sunday it was not windy at all, so....have we won?not exactly!We haven't got drunk, we haven't celebrated..

Let's see what has happened.

THURSDAY , late afternoon : "Audi" gets a redress after being called ocs on the first race.

FRIDAY,late afternoon: "Blue Moon" asks for redress after being called ocs on the only start of the day. They don't achieve it just because the protest form has not been filled properly.

SATURDAY, 4 PM

"Saetta" comes back ashore as leader of the fleet. 1-1-3-3-5-11 is our series.

We have 13 points, "Uka Uka" (Bressani, McKee) 20 points(13-2-1-25-2-2), "Blue Moon"(Favini-Ivaldi) 20 points(4-11-27-1-3-1).

SATURDAY, 8 PM

"Eta Beta" asks and gets redress after being called ocs on race 4.

"Uka Uka" also gets a redress on race number 4, after being called ocs. In this way they become leaders with 11 points(they get 4 points for that race). It stinks...

During the evening we talk with many sailors telling that Uka Uka was over the line before the gun.

SUNDAY, 8.30 AM

I meet Matteo Ivaldi(Blue Moon tactician) in front of the race office. We decide to ask for a copy of the minutes of the previous night hearing.

We find the following statement of the president of the race comittee, Mr Ennio Pogliano:

"I called the protestant boat OCS, I saw it out of the line between other boats 2 sec before the gun, and at the gun I still was seeing it out. I used a transit of the pin on the shore. Some movements of the pin are possible because of the waves"

The final statement of the jury was:"The Race Comittee didn't give evidence of the violation of RRS29.1 by ITA 787(uka uka) because the Comittee itself didn't control the exact position of the starting line."

We fill a protest form as well, asking redress, because we are going to lose the championship ashore in that way!

SUNDAY 10AM : all boats sail to the racing area

SUNDAY 2 PM: all boats sail back after no racing, not enough wind to start a race

SUNDAY 2:45 PM: my helm Niccolò Bianchi and Matteo Ivaldi start the discussion in the protest room, taking some witnesses.

SUNDAY 7:30 PM: the jury still hasn't decided, Niccolò, me and my team have to leave to take the ferry.

SUNDAY 9 PM: we receive a call on the ferry. The jury has decided to give a redress to us under rule 64.2 . But it seems that we have to share the title with "Uka Uka"!!

U N B E L I E V A B L E

Basically the comittee saw Uka Uka out of the line, but it made the mistake of telling the jury about the use of the transit to identify the line, instead of the use of the flag of pin, which was covered by the sails of the ocs boats.

The comittee was so weak to force the jury to give all the possible redresses.

We think we have won on the water. All the rest is very sad.

We have just received the compliments from Lorenzo Santini(Uka Uka's owner), and from Federico Michetti. They finally say that we are the "real" winners. So at least we are happy for that.

But I'm happier to go sailing my moth next weekend on Garda.

Siamo arrivati ad Alghero martedì mattina. i 40 nodi di libeccio e l'onda oceanica ci hanno costretto a terra. mercoledì invece abbiamo dovuto correre molto(8kg sovrappeso!) prima di provare il gioco di vele nuove e di vedere come giravano le manovre con l'inserimento del mitico Daniele Fiaschi.

Il primo giorno per noi è stato perfetto, due primi posti con vento medio instabile e onda cattiva. Nella seconda regata del giorno eravamo al secondo posto dietro a "Uka Uka", ma siamo stati bravi a passarli con un paio di salti vento e di aumentare il distacco poi nella poppa finale con una grande velocità.

Il secondo giorno è stata disputata solo una prova in un instabile vento di 7 nodi. La prova è stata vinta da "Uka Uka", noi abbiamo chiuso terzi.

Il terzo giorno abbiamo avuto una moderata brezza di mare. La giornata è stata vinta da "Blue Moon" (1-3-1). Noi abbiamo fatto qualche errore facendo 3-5-11. Comunque al rientro eravamo ancora al comando della classifica.

Domenica,ultimo giorno, non si è regatato per mancanza di vento...perciò....abbiamo vinto???non esattamente! Non ci siamo ubriacati, non ci siamo buttati in acqua, non abbiamo festeggiato.

Vediamo cos'è successo. Dall'inizio.

GIOVEDI,tardo pomeriggio: "Audi" ottiene riparazione dopo essere stato chiamato ocs nella prima prova.

VENERDI, tardo pomeriggio: "Blue Moon" chiede riparazione , per lo stesso motivo, nell'unica prova della giornata. Non la ottengono solo perchè il modulo è stato compilato male.

SABATO, ore 16: "Saetta" ritorna a terra al comando della classifica. La nostra serie è 1-1-3-3-5-11.Abbiamo 13 punti. "Blue moon" (Favini-Ivaldi)ne ha 20(4-11-27-1-3-1) , come anche "Uka Uka"(Bressani-Mckee)(13-2-1-25-2-2).

SABATO, ore 20: "Eta Beta" chiede e ottiene riparazione dopo essere stato chiamato ocs nella prova numero 4. "Uka Uka" chiede e ottiene riparazione per lo stesso motivo. In questo modo Bressani e company passano al comando con 11 punti(ottengono la media di 4 punti per quella prova). Brutta storia....

Durante la serata sentiamo molti velisti affermare che "Uka Uka" era partito realmente fuori...

DOMENICA,ore 8.30: Incontro Matteo Ivaldi davanti alla segreteria della regata e decidiamo di chiedere una copia del verbale dell'udienza della sera prima. Così troviamo la seguente dichiarazione del presidente del Comitato di Regata, il signor Ennio Pogliano:"Ho chiamato da barca comitato l'ocs del protestante che ho visto fuori in mezzo ad altre prue a due secondi dalla partenza e ho continuato a vederlo fuori anche dopo. Il mio riferimento per l'allineamento era una costruzione a terra sul prolungamento della bandiera arancione del controstarter.Può succedere che ci sia oscillazione in seguito all 'influenza dell'onda."

La conclusione della giuria è stata la seguente:"Il CdR non ha dato evidenza della violazione da parte di ITA 787 della RRS29.1 rispetto alla esatta posizione della linea di partenza così come descritta dalle IdR(11.2).ITA 787 ha diritto a riparazione ai sensi della RRS 62.1(a)".

Così compiliamo anche noi un modulo di protesta, chiedendo riparazione, perchè stavamo per perdere il campionato a tavolino in questo modo!!

DOMENICA , ore 10: tutte le barche escono per la giornata finale.

DOMENICA, ore 14: tutte le barche rientrano dopo alcuna prova disputata per mancanza di vento.

DOMENICA,ore 14.45: il mio timoniere Niccolò Bianchi e Matteo Ivaldi entrano nella sala delle proteste e iniziano a discutere, portando diversi testimoni.

DOMENICA, ore 19.30: la giuria ancora non ha deciso. L'equipaggio di "Saetta" deve partire per non perdere il traghetto.

DOMENICA,ore 21: riceviamo una telefonata quando siamo già partiti dalla Sardegna.La giuria ha deciso di darci riparazione in base alla regola 64.2, ma sembra che dobbiamo dividere il titolo a metà!!!

I N C R E D I B I L E

In pratica il comitato ha visto " Uka Uka" fuori dalla linea, ma ha fatto lo sbaglio di dire alla giuria dell'uso del riferimento a terra per controllare gli ocs, che coprivano il controstarter con le loro vele e i loro scafi.

Il comitato è stato così debole da costringere la giuria a concedere tutte le possibili riparazioni!!

Noi pensiamo di avere vinto in acqua. Tutto il resto è molto triste.

Abbiamo appena ricevuto i complimenti da Lorenzo Santini(armatore di "Uka Uka") e di Federico Michetti. Ci dicono che siamo noi i veri campioni italiani. Perciò almeno siamo contenti per questo.

Ma sono più contento di andare a regatare col mio moth la prossima settimana.
